Surviving Your First Hours in Elden Ring

Elden Ring is one of the most rewarding — and punishing — games ever made. Its open world is breathtaking, but it's also filled with enemies that will kill you repeatedly until you learn the rules. The good news? Every death teaches you something. These tips will make those early lessons a lot less frustrating.

1. Don't Rush — Explore Slowly

Elden Ring rewards curiosity. The map is enormous, and hidden around every corner are items, shortcuts, and sometimes entire dungeons. Resist the urge to beeline for the main objective and explore at your own pace.

2. Always Level Vigor First

Vigor determines your maximum HP. No matter what build you're going for — mage, tank, or dexterity fighter — having more health buys you margin for error. Aim for at least 40 Vigor before progressing into mid-game areas.

3. Collect Every Grace Site You Find

Sites of Grace are your checkpoints and fast-travel points. They're also required to level up. Every time you see the golden beam of light, walk toward it before doing anything else. Missing one could mean a long run back after dying.

4. You Can Sneak Past Many Enemies

Crouching activates stealth. Many early-game enemies can be avoided entirely or taken out with a critical backstab. You don't need to fight everything you encounter — sometimes discretion is the best strategy.

5. Use Torrent (Your Horse) in Open Areas

Torrent isn't just a travel tool. Your spectral steed lets you engage enemies on horseback, disengage safely, and even perform mounted attacks. In open fields, fighting from horseback often makes tough encounters significantly more manageable.

6. Upgrade Your Weapons Early

A +3 or +4 weapon deals dramatically more damage than a base weapon. Seek out Smithing Stones early and upgrade your primary weapon. Don't spread upgrades thin — focus on one weapon you enjoy using.

7. Spirit Ashes Are Not Cheating

Spirit Ashes summon AI companions to fight alongside you. Many players feel hesitant to use them, but they're a core mechanic. The Lone Wolf Ashes (three wolves) given early in the game are excellent for distracting bosses and splitting aggro.

8. Read Every Item Description

Elden Ring tells its story through item descriptions, not cutscenes. Weapons, armor, and key items contain lore that contextualizes the world. Beyond the narrative value, descriptions also reveal how consumables and mechanics work.

9. Don't Hoard Your Runes

Runes (the game's currency/XP) are lost on death and can only be recovered if you reach your bloodstain before dying again. If you're sitting on a large amount, spend them on levels or equipment rather than risk losing them.

10. Limgrave Is a Tutorial Zone — Use It Fully

The starting region, Limgrave, is designed to ease you in. Stormfoot Catacombs, Murkwater Cave, and Highroad Cave all contain valuable loot, upgrade materials, and boss practice. Fully clear Limgrave before moving on.

Quick Reference: Early Game Priority List

  1. Unlock Torrent from Melina at a Grace site
  2. Level Vigor to 25–30 before your first major boss
  3. Upgrade your starting weapon to +4
  4. Obtain Spirit Calling Bell and Lone Wolf Ashes
  5. Explore all of Limgrave before heading to Stormveil Castle

Remember: dying is part of the game. Every encounter you survive makes you better. Take it slow, learn patterns, and the Lands Between will reveal itself as one of the greatest gaming experiences ever crafted.
